The welding build-up of forged steel piston heads for diesel engines is necessary because the piston crowns used in marine engines wear out due to explosive forces. When the wear exceeds a certain level, they must be discarded; however, with our new technique, they can be welded and reused. Not only can they be reused, but their wear resistance is also improved, making them stronger and longer-lasting than the original piston crowns. Currently, there are no approved welding build-ups of high-carbon forged steel by the Japan Marine Standards Association. This will be the first approval in Japan and the world.
